Information on Teak Planters
Teak planters make a warm and inviting statement in your garden, patio, or poolside. Teak is the perfect material for outdoor decorating and design. Teak wood has been used for centuries outdoors and it never goes out of style. Teak planters are an elegant and stylish way to show off your favorite garden plants. Teak planters naturally compliment any garden plants, flowers, or vegetables.
BENEFITS OF TEAK PLANTERS:
Teak wood is a natural fit in construction of outdoor planters. Teak has been used for centuries due to its weather resistant properties. Teak wood contains a naturally high oil content that repels insects (even termites) and resists rot or mildew. Teak planters are a benefit because the resilent teak wood does not require a liner for inserting your potted plants. Simply put your outdoor pots directly into the teak planter and your outdoor plant is displayed beautifully.
Our teak planters are made of environmentally responsible Grade A Teak imported from Indonesia. The teak wood is harvested from government controlled forests, a renewable resource. Elephants have low environmental impact on the forests therefor they are used to bring the teak cuttings to the manufacturing plant. At the manufacturing plant, the teak wood is kiln dried to prevent cracking or splitting as a finished product. It is then made into teak planters using mortis and tenon joinery, the preferred method of constructing teak furniture.
CARE OF TEAK PLANTERS:
Teak wood is naturally low maintenance. When deciding how to care for your teak planters, you have two choices: age to a grey patina, or protect with sealant.
If you prefer the beautiful grey patina for your teak planters, simply do nothing. Your teak planters will age to a silvery grey when exposed to the elements. This is a natural process as the teak oils of the teak planters are oxidized. It doesn't weaken the wood of your teak planter at all. Because only the surface of the teak turns grey, you can restore your teak planters to the original honeytone color in the future if you desire to do so.
Your teak planters can be protected with teak sealer to maintain the beautifully natural honeytone finish. Simply allow your teak planters to weather for about two weeks, wash with a mild detergent to remove surface oils, and seal with teak sealer. You will have to reapply teak sealer to your teak planters about once a year to maintain the honeytone color.
Should I use teak oil on my teak planters? No. There is no product that is "teak oil". It is actually tung oil or some other oil mixtures that is sometimes used on teak wood. It does not mix well with the natural teak oil, nor does it bind well with teak wood. In fact, it becomes an attractant for mildew and makes maintaining your teak planters much more difficult.
